LEVI’S VINTAGE CLOTHING, the vintage line from Levi's, recreates the “1937 501(R) (501XX).”
In 1930s America, the 501 was still primarily worn as workwear, yet details that would eventually define the modern 501 were beginning to emerge.
The 1937 model captures this transitional period. While retaining traces of earlier work pants, including the cinch back, it incorporates details that would later become hallmarks of the 501, faithfully recreating this unique moment in its evolution.
Wear in the unwashed denim and develop the character of a 501 from nearly 90 years ago through your own everyday life. This is a pair to enjoy not only for its appearance, but also for the experience of making it uniquely your own.

Founded by Levi Strauss in San Francisco in 1853. Against the backdrop of the Gold Rush, the brand developed trousers reinforced with metal rivets to meet miners’ need for durable workwear, laying the foundation for modern jeans. The hard-wearing denim soon became a standard, evolving beyond workwear into a style embraced around the world. Today, Levi’s remains one of the defining names in denim.
Japanese selvedge denim that recreates the character of the era.
Crafted from Japanese selvedge denim produced by Kaihara. Woven on vintage shuttle looms, the fabric features the distinctive uneven texture and richly expressive surface associated with traditional denim. With continued wear, it develops an increasingly authentic vintage character.
The 1937 model, where old and new details meet
The back retains the cinch back inherited from the work-pants era, while suspender buttons were removed in favor of belt loops. These details capture a transitional moment when the early 501 was beginning to evolve toward the specifications recognized today.
The front features a button fly with branded buttons, bringing Levi’s character into even the smallest details.
The back pockets feature LEVI’S signature arcuate stitching, while the right pocket is finished with a single-sided embroidered Big E red tab. These period-correct details differ from modern specifications and enhance the authentic vintage character of the 1937 model.
The back-pocket rivets are concealed on the inside of the fabric. Originally introduced in response to concerns that exposed rivets could damage furniture and saddles, this practical detail became one of the defining features of the 1937 model.
An original storage bag is also included.
A classic straight fit with a deep rise and generous room
The silhouette features a deep rise with comfortable room through the waist and legs. Rather than being overly slim, it retains the substantial proportions characteristic of workwear from the period.
It pairs naturally with classic American casual staples such as T-shirts, sweatshirts, and leather jackets, while a shirt creates a cleaner, more refined look. A timeless 501 silhouette that remains easy to wear across generations.
