BARNSTORMER was founded in 1977 with the concept of recreating American traditional styles in Japan. At that time, the domestic ready-made clothing market was still in its early stages, and bespoke tailoring and custom-made garments were more common. In this environment, the founder decided to bring American-made chinos to Japan, importing sewing machines and fabrics from the U.S. to begin domestic production.
Focusing particularly on pants-making, BARNSTORMER gained high recognition at select shops, solidifying its reputation as "the brand for pants."
BARNSTORMER's biggest feature is the establishment of the "dress chino" genre. Chino pants originally have roots in American military wear.
There are generally two types of chinos:
- Those made with flat-felled seams for durability (rugged, military-style).
- Those made with slacks stitching for a more elegant silhouette.
BARNSTORMER focuses on the latter: chinos made with slacks stitching. Using techniques from suit factories, they continue to create dress chinos that combine beautiful lines with comfort.
BARNSTORMER’s chino pants are made with a unique sewing technique that sets them apart from regular casual pants. While typical casual pants are often produced in denim factories, BARNSTORMER’s chinos are made in a factory that specializes in tailoring suit pants (trousers).
In particular, instead of using the two-needle machine that tends to create a more straight-line silhouette common to regular chinos, BARNSTORMER adopts techniques used in slacks tailoring. This results in chinos that, while still chinos, have a three-dimensional silhouette akin to slacks.
The key point that defines the silhouette of BARNSTORMER’s chino pants is the “curve.” The silhouette’s curve is meticulously calculated to naturally follow the shape of the body.
Specifically:
- The side bulge is directed toward the front, creating an S-curve at the center.
- A curve is also added at the back center, ensuring a beautiful rear view.
Thanks to this tailoring, the pants may appear curved when folded, but once worn, they create a perfectly straight, yet subtle, silhouette. Additionally, just like suit pants, they feature a center crease (a central fold), and the tapered design strikes a balance between elegance and comfort.
MacArthur2
The "MacArthur 2" recreates the chino pants worn by Douglas MacArthur, featuring weapon fabric used in military academy uniforms and a distinctive quality derived from the elusive "cold mercerization process."
With slacks-style tailoring and a beautiful silhouette, it offers a sophisticated finish. The design also pays attention to the details, such as the central loop at the waist and the extended belt design. This special dress chino perfectly balances classic elegance with exceptional comfort.
2P Dress Chinos
This classic item reimagines the chino fabric used in 1950s military uniforms, while incorporating a modern tapered silhouette. The two-pleat design, inspired by slacks tailoring, strikes a balance between comfortable ease and a beautiful fit.
The fabric uses traditional single-ply yarn, and a bio-wash treatment is applied for a soft, smooth feel.
