Founded in 1939 by Charles Bart and named after a small village in France’s Auvergne region, ORCIVAL began as a true marine wear brand. In the 1950s and ’60s, it supplied striped shirts to the French Navy. By the 1970s, it had entered the public market, becoming a beloved symbol of authentic French maritime style that continues to this day.

The fabric is made from 100% cotton using a traditional “Russell knit” technique, which is characterized by its complex structure and the use of far more yarn than ordinary jersey knits.

It is woven on vintage machines—now only a handful remain in France—that faithfully preserve the original manufacturing method. The result is a fabric with excellent breathability that can be worn comfortably throughout the year, and that develops a richer texture the more you wear it. Much like denim, it gradually conforms to the body and ages beautifully over time.
