What is 925 SilverSilver 925 is a type of silver. It is a type of silver. The meaning of the number 925 is the silver content (purity) and it means that the alloy contains 92.5% silver. STERLING means "valuable" or "genuine", and the fact that sterling silver is now 925 does not detract from its beauty. STERLING means 'value' and 'authenticity'.
Why not use 100% silver
Sterling silver as it is is too soft, easily deformed and scratched, making it too delicate to be used as a material for jewellery. It is therefore alloyed with other metals, such as copper, to give it strength and make it hard enough to be used as an everyday accessory.
Plating to prevent tarnishing
For gold and pink gold, 925 silver is plated to prevent tarnishing due to sulphuration. This process also increases the strength and resistance to scratches, and gives the jewellery a lightness and softness that enhances its personality.
